EPA Extends Public Comment Period on Cleanup Plan for Lower Ley Creek Portion of Onondaga Lake Superfund Site Located in Town of Salina, New York   Contact Information: Larisa Romanowski, (518) 747-4389, romanowski.larisa@epa.gov   (New York, N.Y. – August 11, 2014) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has extended the public comment period for its plan to address contamination in the Lower Ley Creek area of the Onondaga Lake Superfund site to September 13, 2014. The comment period on the proposed plan to clean up contaminated soil and sediment at the Lower Ley Creek portion of the Onondaga Lake Superfund site in the Town of Salina, New York was originally set to end on August 14, 2014.   Discharges from nearby industries and a landfill contaminated the soil and sediment with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other hazardous substances. PCBs are potentially cancer-causing chemicals that can build up in the tissue of fish and other wildlife and pose a threat to people who eat them.
